Lively Wallpaper for Mac: there isn't one, and here's what to do
No. Lively Wallpaper is a free, open-source live wallpaper app for Windows only, and there is no macOS version or official port. It is built on Windows-specific frameworks, so a Mac release would mean rewriting the app rather than recompiling it. On macOS you need a native live wallpaper app instead.
Lively on Mac, in short
Lively Wallpaper is a free and open-source live wallpaper app for Windows. It handles video files, animated GIFs, web pages, and shader scenes, and it has a deserved reputation as the best no-cost option on that platform. If you moved to a Mac and went looking for it, you found nothing, and that is not an oversight on your part.
There is no macOS version of Lively. This page explains why that is unlikely to change, then covers which parts of what you liked about it are actually available on macOS and which are not.

Why there is no Mac version
Lively is built as a Windows desktop application, and the part that matters most is also the part that is least portable: the trick of parenting a rendering surface behind the desktop icons. That behaviour depends on how the Windows desktop shell is structured, and macOS has nothing equivalent to target.
So a Mac release would not be a matter of recompiling. The window management, the desktop integration, the settings UI, and the multi-monitor handling would all need rewriting against completely different system frameworks. That is a new app that happens to share a name, which is a hard thing to ask of a free project.
- The desktop-layer technique is specific to the Windows shell
- The UI and system integration layers do not cross platforms
- A port would be a rewrite, not a recompile
What carries over to macOS, and what does not
Lively covers several distinct kinds of wallpaper, and they do not all have Mac equivalents. Sorting them out is the quickest way to know whether your particular use case is solvable.
The video and GIF side transfers cleanly, because a video file is a video file. The web and shader side is where the gap is real: those wallpapers are small programs, and running arbitrary web content behind the desktop is not something macOS apps generally do.
- Video wallpapers: fully available on Mac, same files
- Animated GIFs: convert to MP4 and they behave the same
- Web page wallpapers: Lively's will not run on a Mac
- Shader and scene wallpapers: Lively's own will not run, though a Mac app can draw its own
- Lively's community library: Windows-only, and not transferable
If you used Lively for video wallpapers
This is the common case, and it is the one that maps over. Your existing files work: Walyro takes MP4, MOV, and M4V, so anything you were feeding Lively as a video wallpaper can be imported directly with no conversion step.
Import a clip, preview how it sits behind the menu bar and the dock, then send it to every display, the main display, or one chosen screen. Playback is muted by default, pauses in one click from the menu bar, and stops when the Mac locks or the displays sleep.
- Bring your existing MP4, MOV, and M4V files across unchanged
- Per-display targeting rather than one wallpaper everywhere
- Menu bar pause, which matters more on a laptop than on a desktop PC
- Playlists for running a set of clips in order or shuffled
If you used Lively for web or shader wallpapers
Walyro does not show web pages, so it cannot replace Lively's web wallpapers, and it has nothing that reacts to audio or live data.
Shaders come closer. Lively's shader files will not run on a Mac, but Walyro draws four generated scenes, Aurora, Gradient Flow, Starfield and Bokeh, in real time, with colours and motion you adjust. If you liked an abstract background that drifts behind your windows, a scene gives you that without a video file.
To keep a specific scene you liked, record or render it to a video file and loop that as wallpaper. You lose the interactivity and keep the look.
One thing worth setting expectations on: price
Lively is free, and it is fair to notice that its Mac counterparts generally are not. That is mostly a function of platform economics rather than ambition, and it is a real difference rather than something to talk around.
Walyro is free to download, and removing the free version's limits costs a one-time purchase, with no subscription, ads, or account. Lively costs nothing at all, so weigh the difference before you switch.

Common questions
Is there a Lively Wallpaper for Mac?
No. Lively Wallpaper is Windows-only, with no macOS version and no official port. Its desktop integration relies on Windows shell behaviour that has no macOS equivalent, so a Mac release would mean rewriting the app rather than recompiling it.
Can I run Lively Wallpaper on a Mac with Parallels or Boot Camp?
Running it inside a Windows virtual machine sets a wallpaper on the virtual desktop, not on your macOS desktop, so it does not achieve what you want. Boot Camp is not available on Apple silicon Macs at all. A native macOS app is the workable route.
What is the closest thing to Lively Wallpaper on macOS?
For the video wallpaper half of Lively, a native live wallpaper app such as Walyro covers the same ground and takes the same MP4, MOV, and M4V files. For shader-style motion, Walyro draws four generated scenes of its own. It does not show web pages.
Can I use my Lively wallpapers on a Mac?
Video and GIF wallpapers, yes. MP4, MOV, and M4V files import directly into Walyro, and a GIF converts to MP4 easily. Web and shader wallpapers from Lively's library will not run on macOS.
Is Lively Wallpaper free?
Yes, on Windows. Lively is free and open source. macOS live wallpaper apps are generally paid, which is a genuine difference worth factoring in rather than a detail to gloss over.
Is Walyro made by the Lively Wallpaper developers?
No. Walyro is a separate macOS app with no affiliation to Lively Wallpaper or its developers. This page exists because the question comes up, not because the projects are related.

Bring your clips over
If video wallpapers were what you used Lively for, your files work as they are. Walyro takes it from there on macOS 14.0 and later.
